Who Will Be The Leading Search Engine At The End Of 2010

March 19th, 2010

It seems as if Google has some new competition in the world of search engines. Have you noticed that whenever someone is talking computers either the name Google or Bing, seem to pop into the conversation? What many are now pondering is if Bing could be the beginning of the end for Google.

Bing is still miniature compared to the numbers that Google continues to see, however if they continue to rise in popularity they are sure to mark a decline in Google users. As of recent Bing continues to grow steadily, while Google is maintaining their users and Yahoo continues to go on the decline. As Bing continues to take on the Yahoo market, it will soon start to seep into Google, which puts Google in a position to defend the market that it has grown over the years.

Now experts disagree on the effect that Bing’s increase will have on Google, with one firm saying that this will not affect Google and another stating that Google will begin to show a downward trend as Bing slowly creeps up the ladder of internet success. Google is certainly still holding its own and plans to continue to stay well ahead of the pack in this search engine race.

There are many that believe Google will always remain safe. The feeling is, since they have held the top spot in search engines for such an extent of time, and have also maintained happy and loyal customers, they should have nothing to fear from Bing. It has been proven that the Google users are happy and familiar with this search engine and have no reason to contemplate a change now, or anytime in the future.

Google, however, will continue to watch Bing’s progress throughout the year. They will not only look at how Bing is increasing, but also how, if at all, this increase is effecting the number of searches that their site is seeing. Although this appear to be a minimal threat, Google is still determined to keep a close eye on the situation.

Does The Future Of Sem Rely On Facebook?

March 18th, 2010

There has been much skepticism in regards to using social media sites to help boost online presence and attract the attention of not only customers but the search engines as well. For the past several years SEO and SEM companies have worked with this new phase of the internet, doing so half heartedly, wondering if there was really much value in this practice.

There are even numerous companies that have not yet entered into this internet craze, as they are waiting on the search engines to become updated to the new technology of the times. What these companies should now be aware of is that the search engines may soon begin to integrate with social media sites, such as Facebook, and it will happen much sooner than anyone had expected.

The increased popularity of social media sites, continues to grow each and every month. Lets look at Facebook for a second, during the month of February they have had a ten percent increase among the number of search inquires during the month of February (and this was just in the United States). With continued gains, like this, search engines will begin to look into the trend much more closely.

The popularity of Facebook is believed to be due to the new design of their web page, as well as the relocation of the search box from the side of the page to the top. The increased visibility of the search tool has made users more aware of their site, and allows users to search for what they need. The increase in Facebook’s searches has them at approximately four hundred and fifty million searches. Although this number is like small change compared to Google searches, which are a little over thirteen billion, the site is still significant in the market as a whole, and will possibly begin to see an increase in pay per click advertising advertisements.

In general, all of the social media sites are creating a growing impact on internet marketing and should be considered a significant source of traffic on the World Wide Wide. Quite possible, Google will be, if not already doing so, considering this fast growing trend when structuring their search engine spiders for future designs.

Obtaining The Top Searches From All Engines

March 18th, 2010

Maybe you have heard or maybe not about a search engine called Web Crawler. Don’t know if you can really classify it as a search engine per say since essentially all it really does is combine search results from the larger search engines like Yahoo, Bing, Google, Ask and a few others in an attempt to bring you a combination of information that is better quality than you would obtain from using just one search engine at a time.

Web Crawler uses a meta search technology that assists with the compiling of the results from the various search engines, into just one search engine. This gives the users a more relevant search result, as it is a combination of results from some of the best search engines on the internet. Having the ability to take the top ranking search results from all the major search engines, they are able to provide their users with a better search experience overall.

Results on Web Crawler are both sponsored and natural results and that is something that users need to be aware of when using this search engine tool. Web Crawler will not only access the top searches on all the top search engines but will also bring into the search their paid ads as well. Now, while it is true that these results are labeled as sponsored, this can throw off the accuracy of the search results and has turned away some users who find this method of advertising a bit inauthentic.

And though some are a trifile skeptical about the outcomes of the Web Crawler service, it should be noted that the results dug up throughout independent studies gave many efficient results in addition to numerous knowledgable accounts pertaining to assorted items, not only locations that are selling the item. As a whole people are finding web crawler an excellent service and one that’s accommodative during research.

Users seem to find that not only is Web Crawler user friendly, it accomplishes this by not cluttering up the page. It has been said to be an effective search engine too, and is the perfect tool to utilize when you are looking to gain as much information as possible on a particular topic or item.

Are Search Engine Robots Useful?

March 16th, 2010

Search engines employ automated processes or robots, casually known as ’spiders’ or ‘crawlers,’ to find various sites. They’re an important part of the whole internet infrastructure, but why is that so? What do they do exactly?

These spiders actually have a rather limited scope of understanding and power available to them, far less than you would think considering they’re minions of such great and mighty names as Google and Yahoo. There’s a lot of things out of the scope of their understanding, such as frames, visuals such as movies or pictures, and scripting via java. Nor can they peek into parts of sites protected by passwords, or click buttons. Well, that’s what they can’t do. What CAN they do?

The robot makes a list of the web pages in the system at the ’submit a URL page, then searches for these web pages in order from the list the next time it goes on the web. Sometimes a robot will find your page whether you have submitted it or not because other site links may lead the robot to your site. Building your link popularity and getting links from other topical sites back to your site is important. The first thing a robot does when it arrives is to check for a robots.txt file. This file tells the robots which sites are off-limits. Usually these are files that should be of no concern because they are binaries or other files that are not needed by the robot.

Submitting a new URL to a search engine adds this URL to the queue which the spiders are due to ‘crawl’ or visit. However, even if a URL isn’t submitted directly, the spiders usually find it through links from other websites. If you build link popularity, this will help the spiders find you faster. When the robots arrive, they’ll check your site for a file called ‘robots.txt,’ which will tell them what areas of the website they are not allowed to visit. Off-limits files may include things like binaries or other information that the spiders need not report back.

To ensure that searchers get the right results with the most relevant response to their query, quick calculations are done to see that this happens. Server logs and log statistics program results can be checked by the user to see what pages have been visited and how often. Some robots may be easy to identify such as Google’s ‘Googlebot’, while less well-known ones such as Inktomi’s ‘Slurp’ are not easily identifiable. Some robots even appear to be human-powered browsers.

A robot ‘reads’ your site by collecting data on any visible text, on tags you may have in the coding of your page, and on any links available. These are the things that determine what the search engines ‘think’ your content is about, so these are the things you really need to pay attention to when building a site that you want to have high visibility in search results.

Search engines don’t update instantly from moment to moment. No, their database updates can vary in the exact timing. However, once you’re in there, the bots will make a point to visit you frequently so as to pick up on updates and the like. If your site is down at the time the bot may not be able to update your site in the search engine database, so do keep that in mind. So, robots may be scary things in movies, but as you can see, as far as the internet goes they’re nothing but helpful tools to guide us in going from site to site. Embrace them, learn how to help them be more efficient, and work with them to get your web site highly-ranked so that you can maximize your visitors.

How Does Yahoo Compare To Bing?

March 15th, 2010

Although many feel that the decline in popularity of search engines is due to Bing, the new search engine from Microsoft, it appears that there is more to it then that. In December of 2009, Yahoo was at 22% for customer searches; in January of 2010 it had decreased to 17%. Is this something that Bing can really be responsible for?

For several years Yahoo has followed far behind the heading search engine, Google. While some are knowledgeable of this fact, what they’re not knowledgeable of is that this has a lot to do with the visual aspect of their home page, than it does with the actual search results that are acquired. A lot of search engines frequently neglect there search page, but this cab be the cause that a few are successful and others bomb.

With Google and Bing you are getting a very simplified home page. There is enough information for users to look at, however it is not so overwhelming that the customer are not sure where to look or what to do. This is the main contributor to the progressing success of Bing over the last few months. There home page is very simple, and upon a side by side comparison of Google you will find that they are both very similar.

The imagery is simple and relevant to world happenings and does not create chaos on either page. Although Bing uses some standard links that Google does not they are to the side and do not interfere with the search box at all. Yahoo on the other hand, just like AOL who also did not really succeed, offers a multitude of links and pictures that can be overwhelming to users. Even though with Yahoo you can design your own page, many of the items still clutter the look of the search page.

Perhaps it is too late for Yahoo, or perhaps simplifying their homepage will help them gain some new business. However you look at it, it does seem that a simpler, more user friendly page does better for a search engine overall. And if you think about it when you are searching for something you really don’t need a bunch of miscellaneous links to interfere and distract you from what you are really looking for, so it really does make sense.

Page 1 SEO Results: The Real Story

March 14th, 2010

One of the very first things that typically pops into a new website owners mind after putting up a new website is how do I get traffic? The fact of the matter is that this is a question one should ask himself long before the website is even designed, why? Because the best way of gaining traffic to your site means using search engine optimization techniques (SEO). A search engine optimization campaign will help to get your website up high in the search engine rankings where people can find your site. Good search engine optimization actually begins with things like keyword research and proper page structuring and editing, therefore it’s best to actually have your site designed around these factors instead of it being an afterthought and then having to design your SEO campaign around your site (the latter of which can actually end up adding to either your time or your expenses).

The only problem with using SEO techniques is that it requires a lot of time and effort, and if you’re going to hire an SEO services company instead of doing it yourself then a substantial amount of money invested as well. So then be prepared to either give up a ton of your time or a ton of your money, it’s your choice. The good news here is that the potential for a positive return on your investment is simply enormous. I use the word “potential” here as a warning, however.

The promise of huge amounts of traffic stemming from a first page listing on the search engines makes many folks quiver with excitement. Perceptions of big pay-offs in such cases are widespread and while in some instances may be reasonably accurate there’s much truth left untold in this regard. Just how much traffic can one really expect?

Well the truth is that the answer to this question isn’t so cut & dry. The answer can be both yes and no. Most people are under the misconception that a first page listing on a major search engine will produce so much traffic to their site that merely thinking about it seems to cause them to be overtaken with visions of grandeur and little dollar signs twinkling in their eyes. The real truth however, is that the amount of traffic you receive from being on the first page of the search results is dependent upon several underlying factors such as the popularity of the search term or key words your site is listed for, the title and description of your sites link that is listed and whether or not it’s written well enough to make people want to click on it, and also how far down the page you are placed. These are the factors that will dictate how much traffic you will actually see from any search engine listing.

I’ve taken many phone calls over the years from people who are listed on a first page of Google for certain key phrases asking me why they aren’t seeing a huge traffic flow. My answer to them is always with the question “did you do your keyword research to approximate how many queries your term receives regularly?” The answer is always the same too, dead silence. The point here is that if you optimize one of your web pages for a search term that only gets 20 inquiries per day you’re not even likely to see all of those come to your site unless you are near the top of the page and your site description looks inviting. Then again, if you are listed on page 1 for a search term that receives 1,000 inquiries per day and your site’s description attracts a good percentage of the inquirers you might get more business than you’re capable of handling, even if you’re far down the page.

The most important things to remember when embarking on your SEO journey is that page 1 results may not always be what you were expecting, and that research is key in building up traffic. Don’t focus only on getting to page 1 because you may miss other opportunities elsewhere that will help you to reach your traffic goals, so spread out your efforts to give yourself the widest exposure possible. Attaining first page search results is great, and in most cases will only help you on the road to success, but such results are best used as a tool or stepping stone during the building process and not as a magic wand.

SEO – Search Engine Optimization Techniques You Should Understand

March 14th, 2010

Many people dream of making a lot of money online but they are not sure how to approach the prospect. I can tell this, the first step is understanding how to bring in traffic and how other people bring in traffic. SEO, visibility and traffic is what makes a website popular and in order to make sales or bring in traffic, people must know about it.

Internet marketing techniques involve an array of strategy that is implement. Google and Yahoo and good examples of search engine and in order to become one of the top results in the list that is provide upon keyword search; the key is relevancy. There typically millions of results that are derived from the search and it is usually the top of the list is where the visibility is appropriated.

Spamming the index and keywords has long been known to many as a black hat procedure that is frowned upon by consumers and search engines. They resort to a lot of illegitimate practices which are deemed as unethical and violation of guidelines. Link farming with irrelevant keywords on websites that do not want that to happen is considered a cheat. Tampering with the algorithm of engines will result in nothing positive.

White hat strategy is the most preferred method to gain a reputable reputation and respect of consumers and companies alike. They are known to provide a value by giving relevancy to the keywords used in a search. In not so many words, they do not lead a consumer astray.

Good ethical practices should be followed to maintain the reliability of such keywords and relevancy. Black tactics are nothing but trouble and hardships for the person doing them. Sure, it is easy to do so, but will have an outcome that is more than negative. The techniques involve deception and false advertising and the engines will weed them out if they think that someone is doing it.

A good way to achieve a good amount of traffic would be to join relevant sites and take advantage of your membership in certain sites; after doing so, make sure that you are following the rules and provide helpful information to the consumers that will not degrade the value of the site or your name. It is important to make sure that you have the permission from the owner to use their website to increase traffic. Most of the time, they will let you if the benefits are mutual.

Spinning articles and copying content is what is considered plagiarism. Many black hat innovators will use this as a way to save time and work around the system of algorithms. This usually results in banning the content altogether or possibly legal consequences. Use original content that is not derived from another person’s content.

Meta tagging is a way to tag websites or content that allows the user to understand its relevancy. Meta tagging the relevant content and text is appropriate but there are some who will include irrelevancy just to bring in traffic. This degrades the value of search engines and websites. Particularly, no one wants to look for something and find that they cannot find what they are searching for because of the stuffing of keywords.

SEO – Search engine optimization guidelines are better implemented with integrity and honor as it can promote the credibility of users and website. It is better to use white strategy in order for it to pay off in the long run as the black strategy is usually short lived.
