The Truth About Mark McGwire’s Confession

March 1st, 2010

Many fans of baseball were surprised by Mark McGwire’s recent confession. The slugger had used steroids for the greater part of his baseball career, as this gave him an unfair edge and contributed to the mammoth seasons that we as fans witnessed.

Most baseball players are thought to have used steroids in order to pump up their offensive stats, thereby securing more valuable contracts in the process. In McGwire’s case, things were different. He simply wanted to recover from any injuries in less time than he’d otherwise be able to.

This would make sense in McGwire’s case, as injuries seriously slowed down the pace of what would have been an otherwise torrid career. He was one of the best power hitters in the game, but his potential was always cut short due to injury.

What followed in the years to come was exactly what one would expect. He was healthier through the majority of the remainder of his career, and his offensive production was exceptional.

Everything came together in 1998, a year in which McGwire set baseball history. Having broken a seemingly unbreakable record held by Roger Maris, the St. Louis Cardinal hit an astounding 70 home runs during the course of the year.

Just a few short years later, a few steroid allegations by Jose Canseco and some admissions by others shocked and devastated baseball fans. Many began to speculate that McGwire was under the influence of these illegal substances too.

Baseball fans almost feel foolish to have believed that everything was done legitimately. After seeing decades in which players struggled to top 50 home runs, 60 and 70 were suddenly being done nearly every year. This couldn’t have been more obvious.

McGwire violated the trust of the baseball world and cheated his way to a record. Despite this all, he deserves a bit of respect for having the courage to come out with a secret that hundreds of players from that era still likely hold.

Clive Cussler’s The Wrecker

March 1st, 2010

The Wrecker is the second novel in a new Western series by “one of the greatest adventure novelists of our time” (imdb). It promises to become perhaps the most popular Clive Cussler series yet. Because, let’s face it, stories about the Wild West never lose their appeal to American (as well as International) audiences.

A detective by the name of Isaac Bell represents the main character in The Wrecker. Bell is as athletic and fearless as James Bond and as intellectually brilliant as Sherlock Holmes.

Conveniently, Isaac Bell is also independently wealthy, heir to a prominent Boston banking family. After disappointing his father by not following in his footsteps, Bell has pursued his detective work with a fervor that spells obsessive passion more than a way to make a living.

In The Wrecker, the Southern Pacific Railroad hires the Van Dorn detective agency and Isaac Bell to capture a saboteur that has been targeting their construction sites with devastating effects. Southern Pacific’s financing for a project to build a new line between the northern and southern portions of the American West coast is threatened. If any more sabotage ensues, it could potentially sink the entire mega-corporation.

Reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes’ arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty, the villain known as The Wrecker is nearly as brilliant as Isaac Bell himself. Unbeknownst to all, until the end of the book, The Wrecker hides in plain sight, right within the innermost circles of his adversaries.

The agenda of the Wrecker is to seize control of the Southern Pacific Railroad through various dummy corporations he has put in place, which will help him capture the fallout from Southern Pacific’s impending bankruptcy. Not only that but it appears he plans to eventually to control the entire United States railroad system, the greatest source of billionaire wealth in America at the turn of the last century.

Notorious as an avid automobile enthusiast, one reason why Clive Cussler may have picked the early 1900’s as the setting for his new series may well have been to give him an opportunity to write about car chases in classic automobiles from the turn of the last century.

Automobiles featured in The Wrecker include a Packard Grey Wolf, the 1907 Model 35 Thomas Flyer, winner of the New York to Paris race of 1908, Isaac Bell’s classic Locomobile, and a Bugatti Type 41 Royale.

Clive Cussler is a man of many passions, one of the best known and most obvious being his love of the ocean, as evidenced by his countless action novels revolving in and around water. But the fact that he has chosen to live in Colorado, far from the any great body of water, suggests that he also loves the rugged, arid and mountainous landscapes of the American West.

Through The Wrecker, we get a glimpse of this other side of Cussler, the one that loves the arid mountainous landscapes of the American West. And it’s an enthusiasm that shines through with unmitigated contagiousness. The new Isaac Bell series may well help give birth to a whole new generation of Western enthusiasts, as well as spark great excitement in many old ones. With all due respect to the previous Clive Cussler series, his Isaac Bell stories may top them all.

Mrs. Hellman lives in Western North Carolina with her spouse and three children, where she works as a copywriter. She writes book review as a hobby. Visit her site to order The Wrecker, or the latest Dirk Pitt novel, Clive Cussler’s Arctic Drift.

Basic Golfing Tips For Beginners: 1

February 9th, 2010

The popularity of the game of golf has increased tremendously over the past forty-five years, giving us great champions like Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, and Tiger Woods and world-renowned courses like Pinehurst, St. Andrews, Augusta National and the Blue Monster at Doral.

Why has golf become so popular these days? Its the opportunity to be outside, to get a good whole body workout, network with friends or business colleagues at a leisurely pace, and to play a game that you can never play perfectly.

Your achievements are tallied on your scorecard for all time and the desire to improve your game can encourage you to play again and again.

Here follows an elementary lesson for those who know nothing about golf.

A round of golf is usually played on an eighteen hole course. Each hole has its ‘par’, which is the total number of tee shots (drives), fairway shots, chips (short shots near the ‘green’) and putts on the green, it should take to sink the golfball in the hole.

This ‘par’ value is based on the length and difficulty of the hole in question. Pars range from three to six, so if you get the ball into the hole in four shots on a ‘par four’ hole, you made ‘par’. However, if you took three shots, it’s called a ‘birdie’ or five shots a ‘bogie’.

All the holes on a golf course will have at least one ‘hazard’ to make the game more challenging and therefore more interesting. These hazards are usually: sand traps, trees and bodies of water, which are set up in such a way as to be obstructive. A beginner at golf should seek out a course which has fewer and less obstructive hazards so it is easier to play.

Players mark their own scorecard with the cumalative total of shots taken for each hole. After playing all the holes, the players add up their own scorecards and the one with the lowest score is the winner.

It is vital that beginners to golfing should not take the game too seriously, because it takes a very long time to play golf proficiently, even if the professionals on TV make it look so easy.

It makes very good sense to take a few lessons from the course pro, when you are just beginning to learn to play golf, because then you will learn how to stand and swing the golf club correctly.

Dieting For Obese Children

February 7th, 2010

It is hard to see so many children literally overburdening their bodies at such young ages by being obese. These children cannot run, jump or play with other children because their bodies just will not permit them to do so. Dieting is a necessity for these kids in spite of our best efforts to insulate them from the self-esteem problems that often accompany obesity.

If you have a child that is well outside the average weight range for his or her age, you are the one who must take the required steps to ensure that they shed those excess pounds in order to live a life that is as close to average as possible. The first thing you have to do however is consult your child’s physician about the best possible course of action to safeguard the health of your child.

Put quite frankly however, if you do not make the effort to help your child to shed those pounds you are putting the health of your child at risk. We do not let our children play in the street, we do not let them run about with knives, why on Earth would we allow them to commit suicide by chocolate? If you have a child that is overweight, the following tips ought to assist you and them with their dieting.

First of all, do not make food a penalty or a reward. Food is part of the problem with your children and you should not use it against them. Instead, introduce them to healthy alternatives. Do not keep junk food in the house and do not let them buy lunch at school. Pack their lunches for school so that you know what they are getting. If you do not give them junk food to take away and they cannot have it when at home, they will be better off.

Incorporate healthy snacks into your family’s eating routine rather than junk food. Fresh fruit, chopped vegetables, nuts, and frozen yogurt are good healthy snacks for your kids. When in doubt, check with the food pyramid but watch calories in the process. You want your kids to eat a well balanced diet and eliminate junk food and sweets.

Cut out the juices and pop. This may be a huge ordeal in your family but the greatest gift you can give your child is a deep and abiding liking of water. Water works to make their stomachs feel full and keeps them hydrated for the additional activities you should be introducing into their routines.

Make them take dance lessons, take up a sport, or simply get out and run around the yard. The worst thing you can do is to allow your children to become comatose television, computer, or video game zombies. Get them out of the house and get them active. This helps in two ways. First of all, they are not stuffing their faces if they are outside playing and having a good time. Second, they are burning calories as they play which is a big bonus in the dieting process of your children.

As your child starts to lose weight, you should start to notice a very profound difference in not only the way he or she carries his or herself but also in his or her interaction with others. Your child will experience a renewed self-confidence as the pounds come off and the teasing at school stops.

If you are at a complete loss as to how to help your child take the weight off there are camps that are designed specifically to deal with weight issues and building self-esteem in children aged 7-19. A camp may be just the answer you are looking for. Another thing to consider is to lead by example. If you do not eat junk food, if you are active, and if you do not engage in emotional over-eating your child will not be learning those behaviours from you or having them strengthened by you.

Alcoholic Drinks

February 2nd, 2010

In the West, alcoholic beverages are never far away from the scene at festive times, but do we aways know how to get the most from these costly luxuries? Too many people these days just think its a question of ‘getting as much down as possible in as little time as possible’. This is the wrong approach.

After all, most people realize that a good meal does not consist of eating as many chips as possible in fifteen minutes, so why should that principle not apply to consuming a drink too? You will get far more pleasure from a bottle of wine, if you spend an extra dollar on it and drink it slowly with a friend and some appropriate food than if you swill down a cheap bottle of plonk on your own. It makes evident sense, but not everyone sees it.

So, with that idea in mind, I have put together a few tips on how to get more enjoyment from your alcoholic drinks, if you are old enough and of that turn of mind.

Gin and Vodka – if these white spirits are your favourite tipple, always keep the bottle in the fridge, not the drinks cabinet. Keep the mixers in the fridge too. That way the ice will survive longer and you will not be tempted to have to swig it down before the ice melts. If you are having friends around, go one step farther and put the bottle in the freezer. It will not go solid. You can even cut the top off a plastic cola bottle, put the bottle of gin or vodka in that, fill it with water and then freeze it. Take off the plastic bottle and you have an attractive “collar of ice” around your bottle.

The Last Tot – five minutes or so after finishing a bottle of spirits, tip it out one more time and the bottle that you thought was drained will deliver one more tot of contents. It is not a lot, but it is a pleasant free surprise. The same works for many alcohol based items including underarm roll-on and perfume.

White Wine – white wines taste best when they have been gently chilled over a prolonged period, but if you get taken by surprise visitors, put the bottle of wine in a container of ice and cold water. Try not to have to put it in the deep freeze, it is too harsh, but if you must, then ten minutes is all that it requires.

Port – it is always better to decant port and older, heavier red wines, because of the sediment that may be in the bottom of the bottle, which tastes horrible and because it assists the aeration of the wine. However, it is not always easy to see when the lees are coming. The manuals say to use a candle, but they were written a hundred years ago. The concentrated beam from a flashlight is far better. Try using a Durabeam because its swivel head allows it to be directed more accurately.

Decanters – sometimes the stopper becomes stuck fast. Tap it with another glass item and it should come free. If not, run the neck of the decanter under hot water for a few seconds and it will come out.

Labels – if you store your wine in a damp place where the labels are likely to rot or fall off, spray them with hair lacquer first.

Adware and Spyware Blockers

January 31st, 2010

I want to tell you the story of a law school student whose thesis was about money laundering. She often used to Google the term to come up with a useful list of online references. This proved to be useful to her and the entire procedure of writing her manuscript became easier for it. After a few months, she came across several problems like being sent to a page which was totally unrelated to money laundering every time she entered that search term.

At first, she thought it was just a hiccup in the Internet system and then she rationalized that maybe it was a difficulty with the search engine she is using, but the continual recurrence of the problem, made her consider that she had picked up a virus of some sort. We all detest people bugging us, but people we can ward of.

What this law student was faced with was a computer bug that she could not ward off on her own. In the first place, she was not a technologically-savvy individual and in the second place she never used her laptop for anything other than academic research and the actual writing of her papers.

The situation above is not an isolated example. There are many people who find themselves caught up in technological problems that are puzzling, but which can actually be described in two words: spyware and adware. The infamous term ’spyware’ was first coined in the year 1995 but it was popularized in the year 2000. Spyware is computer software infiltrated into a personal computer in order to get hold of the personal data of the user.

This is done by capturing your keystrokes, web browsing history and even scanning the user?s hard drive. It may seem like something you see in James Bond movies, but that is wrong because anyone can become a victim of spyware. Spyware can be utilized to spy on criminals because it is advantageous to society, but how what about the use of spyware to intercept credit card particulars and the like?

What people can do to defend themselves is to block spyware and other software like it such as adware and malware. This can be achieved quite simply by deploying an adware and spyware blocker. The function of these blocking programs include removing or disabling existing spyware or to inhibit the installation of these malevolent programs.

Spyware, adware and malware are not like viruses or worms which replicate themselves, but they cause just as much hassle because they interrupt your computer’s behavior. One of the most common nuisances caused by these programs is the slowing down of the computer which is thoroughly exasperating.

In some infections, spyware is not even evident as the cause of the problem. Therefore, it is best to have a blocker set up on your computer to prevent the infection in the first place. It is far easier to prevent than cure and it is also far better to be safe than sorry

Nike Golf Shoes

January 30th, 2010

Nike golf shoes are one of the pieces of equipment you can use to improve your game. If you have only played golf in casual shoes before, or if you’re just looking for a way to improve your general game, buying a good pair of golf shoes can make a large difference. Just like in other sports, the shoes you wear can seriously affect your performance.

As you have to develop a smooth swing and be able to follow through on that swing in golf, all without losing any control of the strength in your swing, your golf shoes can help or hinder your game for you. Nike golf shoes are designed to help you balance, gripping the turf as much as needed and allowing you to get full power and control behind every swing.

Since these golf shoes have special compartments in the heels, every step is easier to make. They offer the level of support your feet, legs and knees require in order to play golf very comfortably over long periods of time.

Since golf very often involves a great deal of walking, Nike golf shoes have been constructed like a hybrid of walking shoe and golf shoe. They cushion the joints of your legs and knees against the impact from each step you take, allowing you to concentrate your strength and effort on your game of golf, rather than on how you are going to get to the next hole or to wherever it is that your ball has landed.

When you decide to buy Nike golf shoes, there are several things that you ought to keep in mind. The first thing you need to consider is your level of skill. Golf, like many other sports, has gear that can be used by amateurs or advanced professionals alike, but it is better to differentiate.

In most cases, beginners pick Nike golf shoes suited for professionals, but never end up finding the full potential of the shoe, as they are not sure how they can best be used.

While professionals definitely do get fantastic use out of these Nike golf shoes, it is often better for beginners to purchase entry level Nike golf shoes which will better suit their needs. The increase in power afforded to your stroke will often be lost on those who are beginners, as they do not yet have the requisite skill to control the stroke as they need to.

Therefore, it is best to buy Nike golf shoes that suit your skill level, as these shoes will have the comfort and functionality you require. You can purchase Nike golf shoes from a variety of sources. For those who want cheaper shoes and the same quality of professional shoes, you can purchase last season’s models from Nike outlet centers.

If you want only top of the range golf shoes, you can buy from online Nike stockists or through a variety of online retail vendors (see below).
